PROJECT BRIEF

project concept

Project context: This project will be based surrounding the adolescent period of time in life which is a time with many growth such as physically, mentally and surroundings (increase in difficulty). During that period of time, like any other tween, I was very conscious about many things, one being my body and appearance. There is also an increasing amount of freedom, however it is only coupled with greater responsibilities on surroundings and yourself.

Project Description:

In this project, I am considering creating content as a guide to help adolescence go

through the rich experience of puberty and what to expect. I am considering exploring insecurity and fears, health and self confidence.

The nutrient needs for adolescence

Teens need a lot of energy.

Calcium and iron are two essential nutrients for teens because they help build strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Teen athletes especially need calcium for maintaining muscle tissue and a regular heart beat. Iron helps red blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body, giving kids energy.

Omega-3 fat is good for healthy skin, hair, and the immune system. It's also been shown to reduce depression.

looking at healthy eating recipes. We coupled this interest of hers with the style of Studio Lovelock’s design and settled on a set of illustrations that would encourage healthy eating habits to a young audience.

The first deliverable of our project was to create a set of posters that can be used in schools, work places, or out in the public which will highlight the health benefits of certain foods whilst also adding a playful and fun edge to this message. A selection of these can be seen below- the informative ‘Super Foods’, the playful ‘Full of Beans’ and then a bit of both in ‘A Balance Diet’.

create an animation that brings these characters life and create an interest from the audience on how to use these foods to make simple and healthy meals.

THE GIRL GUIDE

http://spinemagazine.co/articles/the-girl-guide

The Girl Guide is a fantastic new book about puberty and growing up, infused with feminism and fun. Holly Dunn spoke to creators Marawa Ibrahim and Sinem Erkas about the process of developing this colourful book.

The Girl Guide was written by Ibrahim, while Erkas art directed each spread and photoshoot and created all of the props used in the book. Below are examples of some of her fantastic work.

PRIMARY research: Interview with friends about adolescence experience

How would you describe your adolescence?

I would say the first few years of my adolescence was quite bliss, spend a lot of days being carefree, but as i hit 15+ I think society, social media and friendship groups slowly got the worse of me and at times it was quite stressful- but over time I learnt to accept and overcome these feelings

What were you interested and immersed in during that period of time? I would say I loved art and used to do a lot of that, it was my expressive outlet, but recently I've been more into fitness things like boxing and aerial yoga and such- good stress reliever

Were you insecure at that time? if so, what were you insecure about?

I think I was mostly insecure of the perception of myself and also how society perceived me- I was too affected by little things and I also put a lot of effort on academics

What did you fear during that time?

The future

Do you have any insecurities now? if so, what are they?

Probably still give myself way too high expectations and stress from comparing my appearance or academics with others

Do you have any fears now? if so, what are they?

Do you think there was a big difference between what you were insecure about then and now? if so, why?

I don't think there is a big difference with what I am insecure about but rather there's a difference with how I cope with it

Primary research

Interview with close friends and myself about insecurities, fears and societal taboo subjects

Interviewee: Tiff

How would you describe your adolescence?

I don't really have much memory. I think I was being trapped in academics, and I have a lot of extracurriculars and tutorials, revisions, so I didn't have a lot of fun time. During that time, I started to have more freedom because it was secondary school and I had my first relationship. My studies were very intense during that period of time as we had to choose our subjects, especially with my school being very competitive, students environment was stressful.

What were you interested and immersed in during that period of time?

I was interested in playing guitar, acting in dramas as I joined music and drama club.

Were you insecure at that time? if so, what were you insecure about?

I was shy and no confidence during that period of time. Didn't have the courage to talk with boys. I started to be aware of my appearance, such as buying 'fancy' clothes, makeup. I also started being aware of my period.

Music and drama club improved my self-confidence because it forces me to perform in front of a crowd and challenged myself and build up my courage.

What did you fear during that time?

I was afraid of the rumours during that period of time, as I was one of the standout people. Being a sensitive, self-conscious person, I was very aware of these rumours and it made me concerned about my image and what people think of me and how people perceived me. As I was dating during that period, I was afraid that people were making up stories about my relationship with my ex-boyfriend, that was supposed to be private. Although there may or may not have been rumors I was worried and afraid there were and it would reflect badly on me.

Do you have any insecurities now? if so, what are they?

I am getting more and more introverted/ quiet and not being as social as before. It may be caused by an insecurity with regards to existential problems and sense of belonging, such as am I doing the right thing choosing a creative career path? am I suppose to be here? if not, where should I be.

I am also insecure about lacking personal depth.

Do you have any fears now? if so, what are they?

about my future and what to do with regards to my career...

Do you think there was a big difference between what you were insecure about then and now? if so, why?

I feel like I'm that as concerned about my image I portray as much as before. It seems like I don't really care that much what people perceived of me.

I just don't think its important anymore because I think being myself is more important than other people's thoughts and perception of me. This could be because I'm more mature than before.

SUPER SPIES: My own list of healthy foods for growing adolescence

Mangos

This delicious tropical fruit provides 150 percent of the RDA for the cancer-fighting nutrient beta-carotene. It's loaded with fiber and potassium. Plus it'll fulfill a day's requirement of vitamin C.

Salmon

it contains heart-healthy omega-3 polyunsaturated fat. Along with its disease-fighting capabilities, omega-3 helps reduce the risk of depression and minimizes arthritis symptoms.

broccoli

It contains compounds like beta-carotene that fight cancer and reduce tumor growth, especially in the breast. One spear of broccoli will give you plenty of calcium, fiber, and potassium, and twice the RDA of vitamin C.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a good source of beta-carotene, vitamins C, and E, and they're rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps prevent heart disease and cancer. Lycopene is actually more rich in a tomato sauce than it is in raw tomatoes.

Dark green leafy Spinach

high in iron

Quinoa

Quinoa is an excellent source of iron, potassium, vitamin B, and especially protein. In fact, the World Health Organization has stated that the quality of protein in quinoa matches that of milk.

Red pepper

high in vitamin C, helps absorb iron

Apples

The once-a-day adage still holds true for this fruit, which is packed with vitamins and easy to take on the go. “Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin, which helps boost your immune system,” notes Fahad. Meanwhile, apples provide high levels of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which promote a healthy digestive system that moves like clockwork. Fahad suggests stirring chopped apples and cinnamon into morning oatmeal or keeping it simple at snacktime: “Almost every nut butter goes well with apples.”

Sweet Potatoes

The fitness-obsessed are familiar with the need to replenish electrolytes after a workout, and “[sweet potatoes] are a really good source of potassium,” says Fahad, who points out that electrolytes—potassium along with calcium, magnesium, and sodium—help balance fluid retention, muscle contraction, and heart function within the body. The flame-orange tuber is also a healthy, fiber-rich carbohydrate option that offers sustained energy for the long run.

Parsnips

This root vegetable may be in the carrot family—twins in shape if not in color—though parsnips differ nutrition-wise. These pale ghosts offer a blend of powerhouse nutrients, including folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B5; as Fahad explains, “B vitamins are crucial for energy production in metabolism.” Parsnips don’t call for a lot of complication, adds the dietician. Simply roast them with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper. “I don’t think they need much to bring out their flavor,” she says of their nutty sweetness.

Brussels Sprouts

While Brussels sprouts may be small in size, they can play a big role in fortifying the body from the inside out. Fahad notes that the cruciferous vegetable contains sulfur, which helps to remove dietary and environmental toxins. However, those tiny cabbage-like heads are most known for supplying vitamin K. “This mineral is essential for the development of nerve and brain function,” explains Fahad, who recommends tossing them with turkey bacon for a more robust flavor.

coming of age movies (my analysis)

Secondary research: coming of age films, such as the princess dairies, mean girls, clueless...etc These movies held a lot of memories because, during my adolescent years, I remember watching them and relating to them a lot. These films usually explore the typical high school/ secondary school experience, and although the ending is usually not so realistic, i feel that the general gist of the adolescent is portrayed accurately. This made me collect several themes that these movies have in common, which are 'a sense of belonging', insecurities and fears, self-confidence are things that all tweens struggle through. I c

This was the first step in defining the central focus of project 2, looking at adolescents. I want to then interview my friends specifically on these topics in order to see if there are any interesting points where I can start researching about

ANALYSIS: PRINCESS DIARIES

This movie allows me insight into the world of a tween. It reminds of what went on during my adolescent years. The movie is very relevant and relatable because it tells about a girl called Mia who understood my troubles of not fitting in. She was awkward, she struggled in social situations and didn’t know how to act around boys. She wasn't some glamed up, unrealistic version of our pubescent years but very realistic.

This is connected to my project because it allows me to remember the common struggles that the adolescents face everyday and different context. The fact that she is a princess but she is still like the rest of us struggling in coming to terms with life moving on gives us more comfort in being ourselves. I am thinking of creating graphic outcomes that are able to solve some of the common adolescent issues that happened in the film. For example, relationships which can include romantic, family, friendships, stages of insecurity, jealousy, arguments and self-actualisation.

Even though she is only a character, people still look to her for guidance as reassurance and what to expect in teen yeras.

‘The Girl Guide’ is for young girls going through puberty written by Marawa Ibrahim, a nine-times world record breaking hula-hoop circus performer.

Over 200 illustrations, photo-illustrations and props were made to represent topics from periods to bras to body hair in a playful and fun way. As the book contains 50 lessons, anecdotes and body stories by Marawa, we decided to make a human typeface out of her body. This became the identity of the cover and a few pages inside the book were typeset with it to illustrate bold quotes and make fun page numbers.

Scanner watch

Totally spies, tv show

I used to always watch this tv show when I was a tween, and I used to be very envious and awe-struck by the imaginative and awesome gadgets given to the spies. This source inspired my idea to create an app that deals with fear of creatures, such as dogs, insects and even people. The app is paired with a watch is similar to the watch above. It is said in the tv show that it allows to scan any object (solid or liquid form) and it is able to give you the information or store this information.

Screen_shot_2012-11-21_at_10.05.58_PM.png   Scam130.jpg

My idea is an app that can constantly scan the surrounding area for the previously inputted data about the subject that they fear or hate, allowing the app to spot it ahead of time and immediately plan a fastest route to escape. There can be pre set possibilities of subject matters that they want to avoid, such as dogs (fear of dogs),  bees, people that they dislike.
